Introduction See also Associations | CHLA/ABSC (Canada) | List of Canadian health libraries | NHS Evidence Health Information Resources‎ CILIP is the acronym for the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in the United Kingdom, the largest library and information organization for LIS professionals in the world. CILIP is the leading association for librarians and information specialists working in business and industry, science and technology, further and higher education, local and central government, the health service, voluntary sector, national and public libraries. As of May 2012, CILIP has approximately 15,000 members. CILIP’s policy is to improve professional practice through its work in education, maintaining a framework of qualifications and range of opportunities. The CILIP Framework of Qualifications is designed to be flexible and adaptable, as the areas will evolve and develop over time to accommodate changing needs. Health Libraries Group (HLG) The Health Libraries Group (HLG) - a special interest group within CILIP - unites all those working or interested in library and information services for medical, health, nursing and other allied health professions, for people with disabilities and health problems, for those who are housebound or in residential care, and for carers and patients in hospitals. HLG is one of the largest Special Interest Groups within CILIP with over 2000 members. See CILIP - HLG Core Medical Titles List Library Association (LA) The Library Association (LA) as it was known for 125 years changed its name and purpose. In its place a new body was created out of unifying LA and the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS). This change made the United Kingdom the second country after Australia to bring the librarianship and information science arms of the profession together. The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) was the result - a new, all-encompassing organization for all information professionals. References Broady-Preston J.
