"...[this book] brings together widely scattered information on health measurement techniques; a practical reference guide by Ian McDowell ... it helps readers choose, administer, and score available questionnaires & rating scales. Reviewing 50 measurement instruments, it describes their purpose and conceptual basis, reliability and validity, and shows a copy of the scale." see free PDF

Psychosocial instruments are used in psychology, psychiatry and related fields to measure behaviours, attitudes and perceptions of patients. These instruments may include the use of questionnaires, interview schedules, vignettes/scenarios, coding schemes, rating and other scales, checklists, indexes, tests, projective techniques, etc. In searching the biomedical databases, you will need to be comprehensive in your use of keywords coupled with the identifiable subject headings in each area. Ask your health librarian for assistance.

Some suggestions & tips

  • Try to vary the use of terms in searching for psychological tests and questionnaires
  • Some instruments are known by multiple names, acronyms, and so on
  • In CINAHL, there is a publication type limit called "research instrument" (e.g., Brief Pain Inventory).
  • In PsycINFO, use the TM field ["tests and measures" field] contains the names of published tests and measures
  • Your academic library may also have access to "Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)"
