Podcasting is a term combining "broadcasting" and "iPod" and refers to syndicating audio or video files onto MP3 players, handheld devices and PCs via RSS and Atom. Synonyms for podcasting include audiocasting and audioblogging. Vodcasting - a portmanteau of video and broadcasting - is popular due to mobile devices such as iPhones and video-sharing sites such as BlipTV, Google Video, iCYou and YouTube.com. An iPhone or iPod are not required to listen to podcasts; they are played on most MP3 players, portable devices, desktop computers or laptops. Some health librarians find that podcasting is useful in promoting library services: 1) for outreach, training and marketing purposes; 2) direct personal and professional development by subscribing to podcasts; and 3) current awareness and learning opportunities for users. The rise of audiovisual content continues to grow as society moves into web 3.0 and as physicians aim to stay current in evidence-based health care.

Some futurists believe we are entering a post-textual era and that demand for video is increasing; others are not so sure that we are leaving text behind at all - especially with the rise of eBooks and eReaders.
