Introduction

Podcasting is a form of audio publishing. The term combines "broadcasting" and "iPod" and refers to syndicating audio and video files onto MP3 players, handheld devices and personal computers via RSS and Atom. Synonyms for podcasting include audiocasting and audioblogging. Vodcasting - a portmanteau of video and broadcasting - is extremely popular due to mobile devices such as iPhones and video-sharing sites such as BlipTV, Google Video, iCYou and YouTube.com.

You do not need an iPhone or iPod to listen to podcasts; they can be played on most MP3 players, portable audio devices, desktop computers or laptops. Some health librarians find that podcasting is useful in providing library services: 1) for outreach, training and marketing; 2) direct personal and professional development by subscribing to podcasts; and 3) current awareness and learning opportunities for end users.

The rise of audiovisual media continues as society moves into web 3.0 and physicians try to keep current with changes in evidence-based health care. Some futurists believe we are entering a post-textual era and that demand for audio and video will only continue.
