Locating yourself in health librarianship – January 7th, 2010

1. Areas of interest in LIBR534:

  • academic libraries - 7 students responding saying they were interested in academic libraries/information services
  • public libraries - 4 responses
  • special libraries - 10 responses
  • technical services - 2 responses
  • public services - 3 responses


2. Undergraduate major:

  • Bachelor of Arts - 4 students (English, History, French language, Political science)
  • Bachelor of Science - 6 students (Biology, Biological anthropology, Cognitive Science, microbiology (medical lab science), Neuroscience/English, Chemistry/Environmental chemistry,
  • Master of Arts - 1 student (French language)
  • PhD - 1 student


3. Professional experience in libraries; health libraries:

  • Academic library experience - a real range of experience in using academic libraries; 5 working; GAAs; volunteering
  • Public library experience - a few students responding; cataloguing
  • Health library experience - Surrey Memorial Hospital library; BMB Library (with Dean); RVH
  • Special library experience - yes
  • No experience - several students responding


4. How does health library work relate to your career goals?

  • I am really interested in health and medicine
  • "I have an intense interest in health information privacy, health records"
  • I hope this course helps me navigate area
  • I'm exploring still...
  • I would like to build on my past education and work experience


5. Most important issue facing librarians in 2010:

  • What is a librarian nowadays...
  • Staying relevant
  • Information literacy
  • The Internet is not the answer to everything
  • Economic downturn
  • Integrating traditional print materials and new electronic/digital materials
  • Staying relevant: understanding, predicting and responding to users


6. Most important issue facing Canadian health care:

  • Survival
  • Aging population; supportive care
  • Adequate funding for universal health care
  • Doctor and nurse shortages
  • Waiting lists and waiting times
  • Technological adapatation
  • Privitization of healthcare
  • Don't know as I am American and only here for School


7. Definition of ideal teacher / ideal class:

  • Inspires one to achieve things they didn't realize were possible
  • Enthusiastic and supportive
  • Someone who is interested in the students and their individual needs and backgrounds
  • Receptive to input
  • My ideal class is student-led
  • "One that does not make me cry"!
  • "Is this a trick question....?"'
  • Ideal class is fun; includes a break; serious too


8. Good learning experience defined as:

  • Constructivist
  • When I am inspired
  • When I am full of great new ideas
  • Achieving something important
