What is critical practice?

Critical practice is grounded in the concepts of critical theory. Critical pedagogies are also similarly grounded.

Further, critical practice aims to develop the ability to see beyond the usual concerns of any given profession, into its unintended side effects, causes and consequences, and to do so from a critical and evaluative perspective. In academic librarianship, the profession might be approached critically by practitioners whose roles can be seen to be more than cogs in a wheel but as agents of social change. In addition, the profession of academic librarianship can be a part of a larger awareness or consciousness within academia, and work towards increasing degrees of empowerment and liberatory discourses.
